Thayer, Mo. — A-21 year-old Mammoth Spring, Ark., man died Sunday, May 27, at Mercy Hospital in Springfield, Mo., after being injured in an accident here May 22 at 3:14 p.m. at the intersection of 6th and Walnut streets.
Thayer Police Chief David Bailey said Gerald L. Young, 21, of Mammoth Spring sustained serious injury and was air-evaced to Springfield. A passenger on the ’07 Spirit scooter that Young was driving — Danielle Fullbright, 19, of Thayer, Mo. — was taken to Ozark Medical Center in West Plains with moderate injuries and was treated and released, police said.
The accident occurred when an ’08 Ford Super Van driven westbound on Walnut by Dorthea B. Hebring, 50, of Thayer, pulled out onto 6th Street and struck the scooter. Chief Bailey said the driver of the van said she stopped at the stop sign and looked both ways and did not see the southbound scooter. According to Chief Bailey, the driver thought she hit a bicycle and and backed up two feet thinking she was on top of them. Chief Bailey said that Hebring was not injured. Hebring drives for the Donlen Corp. of Northbrook, Ill., a company contracted to drive Burlington Northern Railroad employees around the area.
Chief Bailey said a ticket for failure to yield has been issued to Hebring. He added that there may be other charges pending in the case, which is still under investigation.
Funeral arrangements for Gerald Lee Young were made Tuesday afternoon at Clary Funeral Home in Thayer. Visitation is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, May 31, at Clary Funeral Home, 215 S. Sixth St., Thayer.
