Oregon County, Mo. — A 26-year-old Nebraska man reportedly armed with a machete, who stole an Oregon County Sheriff’s truck from the Flash Market in Myrtle, Mo., is still on the run and believed headed north, according to Oregon County Sheriff George Underwood.
Jeffrey Wegener was last seen running into a heavily wooded area at the Oregon/Ripley County line late Monday morning. He was wearing dark shorts, a dark colored T-shirt and tennis shoes.
Police conducted a man hunt for him in the woods using a K-9 dog from Howell County but were unable to turn him up. According to Sheriff Underwood Wegener has military training and survival skills that would enable him to survive in the Ozarks.
Sheriff’s departments in Ripley and Butler Counties today said there have been no sightings or reports of Wegener in their counties
The Oregon County truck was found submerged in the Eleven Point River at an access where he was believed to be staying.
When he was spotted at Route U and Highway 142. he was lying down and was thought to be a coyote until he got up and started running.
Sheriff Underwood said Wegner has no ties in this area and would have no reason to stay.
People in the rural communities have been advised to lock their doors and remove keys from their vehicles.
Wegener is described as 6’0″ tall, weighing 185 lbs., green eyes and brown hair.
Anyone seeing him is asked to call the Oregon County Sheriff at 417-778-6611 or their local law enforcement office.
Radio and TV programs have been carrying his photo and he is on a national alert.
He is wanted for probation violation in Nebraska and could be mentally unstable.
