The prosecution presented evidence tying Wood with the girl’s kidnapping as she walked down a Springfield street on her way home from a friend’s house. A witness who saw Wood grab Hailey and throw her in his truck identified Wood as her abductor before the court.
Police presented a time line from the time of the kidnapping until Hailey’s body was discovered at Wood’s home in his basement dead in a tote from a bullet at the base of her skull. Police who accosted Wood outside his home that night said when asked if he knew why they were there he nodded his head up and down.
Graphic details from the autopsy describing her rape and death were also presented in open court. The prosecution also presented child porno photos and pornographic stories they alleged were written by Wood, one naming Hailey. The defense objected to this evidence saying there was no proof Wood penned it. Asked if a handwriting analysis was done, the prosecution witness said “Not yet.”
Associate Circuit Court Judge Mark Powell found probable cause that the crimes had been committed and that Wood was responsible. He bound Wood over for trial. His next court appearance is scheduled for June 30. No announcement has been made as to whether or not the prosecution will seek the death penalty in this case. His public defender Patrick Berrigan is a well known death penalty qualified attorney.
Wood is still being held without bond.
