Denver, Colo. — Lightning lit up the sky and caused a 45-minute delay of game at Sports Authority Stadium here Thursday night, and the Broncos tied a firecracker to the tail of the Seattle Seahawks and beat them 21-16 in the pre season opener.
This was after the Broncos lost the last Super Bowl to the Seahawks 43-8 and lost to Seattle 40-10 in the 2013 pre-season.
Bronco quarterback Peyton Manning played a mandatory couple of plays and turned the game over to second string quarterback Brock Osweiler. The biggest thing in the first half was that Matt Prater missed a field goal . The Broncos went into the locker room for the half with a score of Seattle 10 – Broncos 7.
In the third quarter Osweiler picked up a touchdown and fumble that was ruled good with rookie Juwan Thompson and Jordan Norwood to make the score 14-10. The Seahawks turned around and scored a field goal to push it up to 14-13. Both teams went to punt out city; then Osweiler got to the 5 yard line and threw a pretty interception that Seahawk quarterback Terrelle Pryor failed to get across the goal line when he was chased and knocked down. Seahawk kicker Steven Hauschka kicked it away for a field goal to put them back in the lead 16-14.
Then, in the Peyton Manning tradition, Brock Osweiler went to work and mounted a 80-yard drive. The quarterback kept the drive alive with his own 15-yard run for a first down and and pitched a 34-yard gain to Jordan Norwood to make the score 21-16.
Seahawk quarterback Tyrell Pryor almost got the job done. On the next play he drove the Hawks down to the 4 yard line and was third down and goal when he was intercepted by Steven Johnson, who took the ball back to the 25 yard line.
With the two-minute warning the Broncos horsed around a little, and Osweiler took a knee.
The Broncos will play the Seahawks again Sept. 21 at Seattle.
The Broncos next play Aug 17 against the San Francisco 49ers. The 49ers lost 23-3 to the Baltimore Ravens Thursday night. The Broncos lost to the 49ers 10-6 in the 2013 pre-season.
