The ABQ Bio Zoo is reportedly upgrading security at the Zoo which was obviously lax. They are reportedly putting on more guards and installing security cameras. Where were they the night Jasper was murdered? Well, no one wants to talk about that.
The small marsupial, who is famous for his mouthy ways and makes a lot of noise, was not heard the night of Oct. 14 when someone entered his outdoor enclosure and bashed him in the head with a block of asphalt.
The Tasmanian Devils, (four of them) were on loan to the ABQ Bio Zoo after a 10-year effort to bring them here since December of last year. The Australian officials say they are not holding the ABQ Bio Zoo at fault. Basically their attitude is well these things happen . They might even send them a replacement for Jasper.
In the meantime no one wants to talk about the lax protocols that led to Jasper’s death.
When the Hill ’n Holler Review got through to the zoo, a non-spokesman there said that the Albuquerque Mayor, Richard J. Berry, had issued a directive that no one there was to speak to the media. The Mayor’s office didn’t have much to say either.
Today the Mayor’s Office announced it had contracted a private investigator to determine what went wrong.
The Bio Zoo Society is still taking reward donations and say that any extra funds sent in will be used to purchase surveillance cameras. Sounds like funding for the zoo is a big low priority item.
A society not willing to fund a zoo doesn’t deserve a zoo. And an obviously uncivilized society that murders endangered species for fun should not be rewarded with another Tasmanian Devil to kill.
Anyone who wants to help up the ante to catch this uncivilized animal can call Julie Miller Rugg at 505-764-6280.
Send your dollars in. If the reward gets high enough, perhaps someone will roll over on Jasper’s killer.
