Crittenden County, Ark. — Two people were killed and five injured in a major pileup in the rain on I-40 at mile marker 276 here late Wednesday morning.
Arkansas State Police said Robert H. Billings, 68, of Nesbit, Miss., and Iketha D. Winchester, 45, of Houston, Tex., were killed in the crash.
There were five people injured in the six-vehicle collision. Those injured were: Ralph Herring, 57, of Ft. Wayne , Ind.; Brian Tapley, 45, of Olive Branch, Miss.; Louis Hatchett , 38, of West Memphis, Ark.; Robert W. Hale, 64, of Marion, Ark.; and Rachel Sanders, 13, of Courtland, Miss., according to the police report.
There were six vehicles travelling eastbound when a ’10 International semi truck driven by Iketha Winchester in the right lane of traffic rear ended a ’14 Dodge Ram pickup truck driven by Robert Hale was pushed to the right off the road and into the rear of an ’11 Chevy Tahoe driven by Louis Hatchett. The Dodge Ram pickup truck kept moving east and hit an ’06 Volvo TTL driven by Brian Tapley in the rear. The Volvo was then slammed into an ’03 Ford van driven by Bobby Davis, 66, of Hernandez, Miss., which was trapped between an ’11 Peterbilt TTL driven by Ralph Herring of Ft. Wayne, Ind., and another unidentified vehicle driven by Adolfo Gonzalez,38, of Anaheim, Calif. The Peterbilt was stopped in the right lane beside the seventh vehicle which had come to a stop in the left lane beside the Peterbilt.
Billings and Sanders were passengers in the Ford van.
The injured were taken to Regional One Le Bonheur in Memphis, Tenn.
The victims were taken to Wolfe Brothers Funeral Home in West Memphis, Tenn.
Those not injured were Davis and Gonzalez.
