Poplar Bluff — The Missouri State Highway Patrol is conducting an investigation today into a police involved fatal shooting Friday in Poplar Bluff. The identity of the victim has not been released yet today.
According to a report, a Poplar Bluff policeman shot and killed a suspect Friday as they were attempting to apprehend him.
The suspect was believed involved in a stabbing that occurred at 11:55 a.m. on Lester Street. The victim was taken to an area hospital in critical condition, according to police report.
Poplar Bluff police then developed a suspect and went to an apartment building at 201 S. Broadway where they encountered the suspect in a common hallway of the building.
The suspect was armed with a knife which he was ordered to drop, and when he refused and charged police still holding the knife, he was fatally shot by a Poplar Bluff policeman.
The officer involved shooting investigation is being conducted by the MSHP division of drug and crime control. The investigation was requested by the Poplar Bluff Police and the Butler County Coroner.
Update: The MSHP late this afternoon identified the suspect killed by a Poplar Bluff police officer as 22-year-old Thurrell Jowers. Jowers’ autopsy is set for 9:30 a.m. Monday.
