The Broncos had beaten the Chargers 35-21 Oct. 23 at Denver.
The Broncos scored against the Chargers in the first quarter Sunday with a Connor Barth field goal, the first of five he would kick in the game. That made the score 3-0. The Broncos scored only one touchdown in their second possession of the third quarter with a 28-yard strike from Peyton to Demaryius Thomas to make the score 16-3.
The Chargers managed to score only one touchdown against the Bronco defense as Phillip Rivers connected with Antonio Gates from the 5 yard line to make the score 16-10. Rivers got into the red zone after an 80-yard drive as the fourth quarter opened.
The Broncos managed to get into the Charger red zone but usually had to settle for field goals. At the end of the half from the one yard line Manning threw a block for C.J. Anderson only to have the touchdown disqualified and settled for a Barth field goal to make the score 9-0.
Manning, who suffered a thigh injury when he blocked for Anderson, did not come out for their last possession of the half and backup quarterback Brock Osweiler managed to turn in a lackluster performance and sent the Broncos to punt out city.
The Chargers wound up the half with a field goal as they got to the Bronco 17 yard line and settled for a 30-yard Nick Novak field goal to end the half 9-3.
The second half saw Manning back out on the field and the Broncos scored their only touchdown in the third quarter. In the fourth quarter the Chargers scored a touchdown, and Bronco Connor Barth kicked a 49-yard field goal to make the score 19-10.
For the rest of the quarter the hapless Chargers went to interception city. Broncos Aqib Talib and Rahim Moore snagged Phillip River’s passes and closed them down. The final interception was at the Bronco 10 yard line with a little over a minute left in the game; first and goal and Moore sent the Chargers to Interception City.
Broncos scored their fifth field goal on the Talib interception to make the final score 22-10.
The Broncos are now 11-3 and will play the Bengals at Cincinnati on Monday night football. The Bengals are 9-4-1 after defeating the Cleveland Browns Sunday.
The Broncos close the regular season Dec. 28 playing the Oakland Raiders. The Raiders are 2-12 after losing 13-31 to the Kansas City Chiefs Sunday.
