Thayer, Mo. — The City of Thayer has a new Mayor today. Yesterday, Monday, Jan. 5, Mayor Junior Brewer resigned in the morning, and by the afternoon Mayor Pro Tem Ken Cotham was sworn in as Mayor.
Cotham was alderman from the North Ward 1 and was elected last April, as was Brewer.
Brewer, who had been in poor health, said he resigned on his doctor’s advice. According to the City Clerk, Brewer had been undergoing chemo treatments for the last several months.
Cotham, who runs Cotham’s Auction on Hwy. 63 in Mammoth Spring, is expected to throw his hat in the ring for Mayor in next April’s election.
A replacement for Cotham’s North Ward 1 seat is expected to be appointed at the next regular council meeting at 7 p.m. on Jan. 13.
City Council members are currently reviewing prospective candidates for the position.
Brewer, with 182 votes, defeated incumbent Mayor Merle Williams, who received 125 votes, and Bob Grimes, who got 92 votes, in last April’s election. Brewer had been Ward 2 alderman.
Cotham defeated Mike Harber 144 to 40 in the April election.
