Yellville, Ark — A jury of eight women and four men bought Christina Scroggin’s tale of woe, Friday and dropped her capitol murder charge down to manslaughter and sentenced her to a rap on the knuckles eight years for shooting her younger boyfriend Raul Segura Turrieta, 24, three times and stuffing him in the trunk of her mothers car.
Scroggin testified for five hours during the trial and painted herself as a totally submissive and abused woman who killed her boyfriend on the way home from a trip to Little Rock because he allegedly lunged at her when they stopped on a gravel road on the way home.
Had the jury decided to go for capitol murder, Scroggin could have gotten life without parole . As it is, she will probably only have to serve 30 per cent of her sentence and could be eligible for parole in a little over two years.
During the trial the victim was portrayed by the defense as a controlling abusive person, a little short of a “collector.” The prosecutor called witnesses who described him as a loving gentle man who would not be in the kind of relationship described by Scroggin
The jury took about three and a half hours Friday to reach their verdict.
