Wood appeared in street clothes today before Judge Thomas E. Mountjoy as he denied a motion filed in behalf of Wood to deny cameras in the courtroom. Today’s hearing was photographed, and a video camera was present.
Wood is charged with the first degree murder, kidnapping, rape and sodomy of 10-year old-Hailey Owens in February 2014 as well as armed criminal action.
The prosecution is seeking the death penalty in the case.
Wood, a youth athletic coach, is accused of brutally yanking the young Springfield girl off the street as she was walking home, taking her to his house where he allegedly raped and shot her at the base of her skull and stuffed her in a plastic tote to go out for garbage pickup.
