Police have identified Chris Harper-Mercer, 26, who went into a classroom in Snyder Hall and started shooting. Reports had been first that he had 20 victims, but later that was scaled down to ten persons dead including the shooter. At least seven were injured, police said later.
It was reported that the gunman asked his victims to stand up and state their religion before he shot them.
The gunman, who had not been identified as a student at the college, was found on social media where he ran pictures of himself and posted blogs. Seeking dates, Harper-Mercers described himself as not religious but spiritual and a conservative Republican.
Most telling was his blog posted about Vester Flanagan, who recently killed a TV news reporter and camera man on live TV in Virginia. “People like him, ” Harper-Mercer wrote, “have nothing left to live for and the only thing they have left to do is to lash out at a society that has abandoned them.” Harper-Mercer commented on the instant notoriety that Flanagan achieved: “He was on every screen and his name was on the lips of every person on the planet, all in the space of one day . . . Seems the more people you kill the more you’re in the limelight”
Chris Harper-Mercer was shot down by police officers who arrived on the scene.
He was armed with four guns — three handguns and a AR-15 long gun.
According to a California paper, the shooter was an ’09 graduate of the Switzer Learning Center a school for students with learning disabilities and emotional issues.
