West Plains, Mo. — A new preliminary hearing date at 3 p.m. Oct. 20 before Judge Truman Wiles has been set for Dakota Bland, a 25-year-old West Plains man charged with shooting two men here, at their home.
Bland has been charged with two counts of first degree assault, two counts of armed criminal action, unlawful use of a weapon, unlawful possession of a firearm, and burglary in the first degree.
Information regarding Bland’s past criminal history is included in an amended probable cause statement stating that he had been charged with shooting from a motor vehicle and unlawful possession of a firearm.
The amended probable cause statement filed by West Plains Police contains information from a third party who was present at the home that was fired upon. The person, a Susan Blair, said she was asleep on a couch on the east side of the room when she was awakened by a gunshot. She said she saw an unknown man resting his arms on a couch through the window holding a gun. She said she saw the gun discharge.
Rick and James Blair were both wounded by the shooter, whom police say was Dakota Bland. According to police the shooter was wearing a red hoodie and a bandana over the lower part of his face. A red hoodie and bandanas were found at Bland’s residence, according to police.
Other information in the probable cause statement includes a recorded phone conversation between Bland and a detainee during which Bland discusses the shooting and refers to himself as the “stick-up kid.” He said he went to the door blasting until the victims fell.
The prosecution has issued eight subpoenas for witnesses to appear at the preliminary hearing.
