West Memphis, Ark. — Arkansas State Police Corporal Sammy D. Koons pled not guilty today before Crittenden County Court Judge Fred Thorn and was given a March 3 trial date in District Court on a charge of third degree assault.
Koons is accused of hitting a juvenile near his West Memphis home last September.
Koons is accused of stepping outside his home and confronting a group of juveniles. He is charged with hitting the juvenile on or about the head. The assault charge is a misdemeanor and carries a penalty of either a $500 fine or 30 days in jail.
Corporal Koons works out of the Forrest City state police office and has been on paid administrative leave since the incident occurred last September.
He also has an internal complaint pending against him being investigated by the State Police Office of Professional Standards.
