Mountain Home, Ark.—- One diver was killed and another injured in a training exercise held at Lake Norfork Saturday, June 11.
Baxter County Sheriff’s Office said they were called to Lake Norfork Saturday morning with the report of an unresponsive diver being brought to shore.
Police said a group of divers were training in a 100 ft of water when one diver apparently became confused and began swimming toward the bottom of the lake.
Police said the instructor, Todd Reed, 37, of Jonesboro recovered Brian Malone, 46, of Jonesboro at 177 feet.
Malone was given CPR and taken to Baxter County Regional Medical Center at Mountain Home. Malone was pronounced dead by the Baxter County Coroner.
Reed was airlifted to a decompression chamber in Fayetteville.
Malone was a firefighter/medic for the Memphis Fire Department and a member of the Jonesboro Police Reserve where he also worked as a SWAT Medic.
Malone’s funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday, June 18, at the Emerson Memorial Chapel, 1629 E. Nettleton, Jonesboro.
Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Friday at Emerson Funeral Home.
