Baker will perform at Mountain Village 1890, 1011C S. Woods Blvd, Bull Shoals, Sunday at 2 p.m. Admission is $10 for adults and teens, $5 for ages 6-12 and free for ages 5 and under.
Baker, who has been called a new “coal miner’s daughter,” has sung professionally since she was a young girl in the mountains of Southwest Virginia, but recently started to attract national attention.
Her single “Coal Train” was selected by the Academy of Country Music (ACM) as one of a handful of songs by emerging artists for the 2015 ACM Awards ZinePak, a 2-CD album that debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard Country Albums chart and was sold nationwide at Walmart. The ballad tells the story of a young man who is forced to leave his hometown in search of a better life, because of the declining coal industry, an issue that is especially relevant in the current presidential race.

Her latest single, “Heart of Appalachia,” has been designated as the official theme song of the Heart of Appalachia Tourism Authority in Southwest Virginia, where she grew up. The song, which is about the natural beauty and cultural heritage of the region, was recorded with help from bluegrass and country legend Larry Cordle. Cordle, who has written many hits, including “Murder on Music Row” and “Highway 40 Blues,” produced the vocals and sings background vocals on “Heart of Appalachia,” along with Val Storey. Baker, who co-wrote “Heart of Appalachia” with her long-time collaborator Scott Arnold, is donating the use of her song to the tourism authority in an effort to help boost tourism in Southwest Virginia, which has been hurt by job losses in the coal industry.
“Southwestern Virginia is only producing about half the amount of coal it did 10 years ago,” Baker said. “The economic impact has been devastating. A lot of miners have lost their jobs. For some people, that means moving away to find work.”
“I would love it if this song and video would inspire people to visit the area, on vacation,” she said.
Bull Shoals will be the final stop on Baker’s Western tour, which include sa performance at the Country Jam Festival in Grand Junction, Colorado. Other notable recent projects include the nationally syndicated PBS television concert series “Song of the Mountains” and a small role in “Born in Bristol,” an upcoming documentary about the early history of the country music industry, with musical direction by Grammy-winning songwriter and producer Carl Jackson.
Mountain Village 1890 is an historic recreation of an Ozark settlement, consisting of actual buildings from the period. It is also the site of Bull Shoals Caverns, a tourist cave.
