DenverBroncos-Logo 3Chicago, Ill. — Hey, Coach (John) Fox, I know its only pre-season, but a full fledged trip to Shut-out City . . . Whoa! Denver Broncos shut down the Chicago Bears 22-0 in the pre-season opener Thursday night, Aug. 11.
Chicago-Bears-LogoYeah, this is only a show and tell game, but John, give me a break. Seven sacks, only 130 total yards. “Star” quarterback Jay Cutler only picked up 18 yards, and backup QB Brian Hoyer managed 81yards with one interception. And the Bears spent the whole game in Shut-Out City.
(Fox was head coach of the Broncos 2011-2014 before taking over the Bears in 2015. The Broncos beat the Bears 17-15 Nov. 22 last year in Chicago with Brock Osweiler as quarterback.)
Well, this is what it looked like : Denver quarterback Mark Sanchez opened it up with a touchdown pass to Demaryius Thomas in the first quarter, and the second quarter boosted the score with two field goals by Brandon McManus — one for 37 yards and the second for 44 yards, and that made the score 13-0.The Broncos went into half time with a 20-0 lead after a blocked McManus kick and a score by Zaire Anderson to knock it up to the 20-0. As the Bears watched.
Final score of the game was a safety by linebacker Bronco Dekoda Watson in the third quarter.
Both Sanchez and Rookie Trevor Siemian played quarterback for the Broncos.
Siemian did not score but racked up 88 yards to Sanchez’s 99 yards a touchdown and one interception. Hmm, I still like Siemian. Rookie quarterback Paxton Lynch completed 6-7 passes for 74 yards but was sacked three times. Neither Sanchez nor Siemian was sacked.
Wide receiver Cody Latimer led the team with seven receptions for 82 yards.
Total yards for the Broncos was 344 — not a stellar game for the Broncos either. But Hey — they won.
The Broncos next play the San Frqancisco 49ers Saturday, Aug. 20, in Denver, then play the Los Angeles Rams Saturday, Aug. 27, in Denver.
Update: The 49ers lost 13-24 to the Houston Texans in Santa Clara, Calif., Sunday, Aug/ 14. The Rams defeated the Dallas Cowboys 28-24 Saturday, Aug. 13, in Los Angeles.
The Bears next play the New England Patriots Thursday, Aug. 18, in Foxborough,Mass., then play the Kansas City Chiefs noon Aug. 27 in Chicago.
The Kansas City Chiefs start the pre-season 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 13, playing the Seattle Seahawks in Kansas City, then play the Rams Saturday, Aug. 20, in Los Angeles.
